SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BACKGROUNDAphelius has a solid knowledge of aetherology and is skilled with non-magical healing. As with everyone who has graduated from the Imperial Magitek Academy, he has a scientific background that helps enhance his skills. He also worked briefly in the VIIth Legion under Valens. That's all there is to it.He is not a 'mad scientist' archetype, nor is he interested in research.He is not a 'mad doctor' either and genuinely cares about the ethical wellbeing of his patients.He does not and will not agree with such character types, and while this might be the source of juicy conflict to some, this plot hook gives me no enjoyment on any level because no one intends to write their character out of the tired stereotype.Therefore I please ask that anyone who seeks to interact with Aphelius to refrain from such plot hooks or drag him into any sort of debate on ethics. This is non-negotiable.

There is nothing special about it, but the way he handles it shows he clearly knows all of its ins and outs, including being able to reload and rotate the chamber manually with one hand.COMBAT SKILLS: Trained and skilled in usage of various firearms, Aphelius is capable of learning any sort of firearm in a short time. His marksmanship and spatial awareness are exceptional.For self-defence he knows disarming hand-to-hand combat, but prefers to run rather than fight. As a pureblood Garlean, despite appearances his physical strength matches that of a Highlander's in good shape. Because of his strength, he can fire most light firearms with one hand.- NOTE: His right arm was amputated and replaced with a magitek prosthetic. As he is ambidextrous, it does not hinder him, but in its absence he has a slight problem with his balance.PERSONALITY: Aphelius is a born critical thinker, always questioning everything and not accepting answers at face value. He is a shrewd, compassionate and intelligent man, but he lacks the self-confidence to see himself as a figure to follow. Instead he chooses to take a step back instead of taking charge, oft regretting that he didn't step up sooner.He struggles between kindness and indifference, as he is used to kindness as a weakness that others can take advantage. Yet when he is cornered, this is when his true self shines: Aphelius in his element is a surprisingly efficient and competent pragmatist who unknowingly demonstrates strong leadership qualities.As a Garlean he is stubborn, proud, pragmatic and blunt, wracked with guilt and simmering with anger. As a man he is stern but kind, wishing to improve but not impose, and struggles with insecurities and PTSD. As a medicus he will fight to keep people alive no matter who or what they are. Under the Interim Senate, Aphelius aids his people at Tertium as a senior field medicus who deals with emergency cases. He also has responsibilities of inventory and tracking of medical supplies, and occasionally manages the roster of medicuses available.Aphelius is more than happy to negotiate hands other than Garlean to help, but he's still subject to a chain of command.He does not like to mingle with people who are incapable of changing their opinion. If you are interested in your character experiencing a paradigm shift in the face of a man who has justified anger for his own society, he's up for it.

Aphelius is, in his own words, a broken man. His parents were loving and gave him the upbringing that has given him the stern but kind disposition he has. His society on the other hand was a different story, and one that has irreversibly changed his outlook on life.He lives in distrust, a little fear and still in some pain. Aphelius does his best to work through it on his own and with the help of some people he has made progress, but his trust issues mean he still struggles alone most of the time with trying to heal.This is a recovery and healing plot arc, I will not entertain toxic/abusive relationships.

 ABOUT  I am a long-term, 1-to-1 multi-paragraph RPer who enjoys character development and plot-based stories. I enjoy RPing in FFXIV and have been doing it for a while. I do not mirror and do not expect my partner to mirror. WRITING  I heavily prefer writing between 1-3 paragraphs. I favour describing the setting the scene is in, using the world as a character and employing the use of NPCs to flesh out the world. LORE COMPLIANCE  I work within the lore, logic and narrative setting presented in FFXIV and I'm quite lore-adherent. I prefer my RP to be low-power. Any combat encounters will be preplanned in OOC discussion, I do not do dice rolls and prefer that all combat is relevant to the character development. IC=/=OOC  Aphelius as an Imperial is a divisive, problematic character and as such holds views that I, the player, do not agree with nor condone. This is very much a case of separation between IC and OOC and I would like to keep it that way. STYLE  I lean towards plots and characters that are grounded. I also enjoy giving characters their moments in the spotlight, so that RPs are a good balance of hard work and payoff for both my partner and me. I write my characters as real people with vulnerabilities who are capable of making dumb mistakes.  CONTINUITY   On Discord my RP is asynchronous due to timezone differences.   001   You must be 21+ for me to consider writing with you. My plot arcs touch on darker and more mature themes. I will also discuss with you about what you want in a Session Zero beforehand; I do not start RP immediately.  002   I require open communication and transparency between us at all times. I know it's unnerving, but I would prefer that you are upfront about what you want to achieve so that I can enable your character development as much as you enable mine.  003   I do not expect you to mirror my posts, but I prefer RP that isn't dominated by one-liners, posts that are entirely internal monologue or script-style dialogue with no descriptors of the setting in the scene.  004   I lean towards plots that explore personality clashes, the consequences of conforming to society, themes of handling grief, atonement and betterment of oneself, and discussions of the detrimental effects of colonialism, fascism and corrupt meritocracy. I am okay with the resulting character conflict. But don't use him as your character's catharsis dump. He may be blunt and direct, but he is not going to antagonise your character for no reason.  006   I will do adventure RP with a good balance of slice of life and levity, with mostly grounded plots that are character-driven, not interaction-driven.  007   Don't be weird about Garlemald and its themes. Keep all that IC. Garlemald was a horrible nation ultimately and my writing will reflect that.

Finding out more about him is only done in RP. EXTRAS  The information on this page is stuff that may not show up in RP at all and is only used to get some idea of his character 'behind the scenes'. CHARACTER  Aphelius is a partial deconstruction of a man who has experienced indoctrination and is a product of his society, but is also a critical thinker who just did not choose to step up when he had the power and privilege.He is well aware of the hypocrisy, and is struggling to de-programme himself from the insidiousness of the indoctrination and the horrible ideals of his society. He's trying to be a better person.As a result he's a disillusioned patriot, loyal to his homeland but disapproving of its government. He believes in the intent behind the Garlean doctrine; he never agreed with its methods.While he was part of a privileged standing, he also suffered at the hands of his own people in many ways. At the end of the day, he intends to find some way to be more of himself but not living in fear of his own people.

 FAMILY  Scaevola is not associated with Scaeva (Nero's family). It is a smaller nobody family and is only named because most of every generation is left-handed. Aphelius is also predominantly left-handed. NICKNAMES  'Aphie' is a nickname only used by his mother. He doesn't like it, but tolerates it when it comes from her. It is off-limits to anyone else. 'Spatula' is an insult came from his Magitek Academy peers mocking him for failing magitek engineering and is a deliberate twist of his family name. My personal moniker for him is 'garlic jester'. EXPRESSIONS  Aphelius isn't expressive due to not feeling emotions as strongly as most people. He expresses his moods through inflection changes in his tone. He doesn't smile either; this should not be treated as normal. GLASSES  He's far-sighted and needs reading glasses. His third eye helps him when in combat, but reading is out of its reach. BE ADVISED  Apart from his medical work and the odd cursory handshake, he avoids physical contact due to PTSD. He is asexual for the same reason. ART  He really likes Allagan aesthetics. He does not look up to the Allag, however. OUTWARDLY  He does not appear to be a pureblood Garlean at first glance because his third eye is obscured, but it does not take long for anyone to find out.

He hadn't thought his mumbled Garlean would have annoyed her so. It had slipped from him out of a longing for a quieter time, when he was free to step outside and take in the fresh air. In his lessons studying Common he'd found that Eorzean didn't have equivalent words for what he'd just mentioned, at least not within his capabilities. He'd opened his mouth to ask her then if there was something like it that he just didn't know, but duty called and she was gone, a snow hare into the snow. He'd just have to ask her later.Besides, the dispensary was a mess. He set about to clearing it up, characteristic Garlean efficiency enabling him to take inventory quickly and replenishing supplies as he moved down a mental checklist. After this he'd consider taking a look into the infirmary to see if he was needed. The Contingent healers were so efficient with their magic that he felt almost like an optional attachment to this deployment, not his role as a key part of the team like he'd been.If that were the case they would have sent out search teams for you the day you lost your arm.Aphelius frowned. It still niggled him, huh?The door opened and he looked around to see a harried Contingent healer. "Sorry to bother you but we've got a Garlean who insists on not having magic used on him. Could you help us out? We're short on hands and magic makes the healing faster, but he won't accept it.""Sure," he answered immediately, raising his eyebrows. Legionnaires were less likely to object to aetheric healing. There had to be a reason.

As it turned out he didn't need to wait long to find out why. He'd barely knelt by the man's side, eyes roving over the way the soldier held his wrist, before the young man whispered in Garlean to him. "I didn't want them to use aether on me because they needed it for someone else who was severely injured over there," he began anxiously, "and I don't feel comfortable being so indebted to them.""They're here to help, not wring your blood out of your body just because you got hurt," Aphelius replied bluntly in Garlean. "May I feel your wrist? What happened?"The soldier winced as he let Aphelius take over. "I fell trying to get out of the way of that yeti, tried to break my fall and I think I either broke or twisted it. It doesn't hurt too badly, but if you press-- ah!"That didn't take long. Aphelius nodded and eased his grip on the man's wrist. "Hold it for me there. I'll get you an ice pack and a brace. You sprained it but it isn't serious, you just need a few days off and no pressure or strain on your wrist."Whilst he set the brace up, the soldier remained silent until he was almost done before leaning forwards. "You're the one who saved that girl with the cat ears, right? From the yeti?" He hesitated the moment Aphelius' yellow gaze turned onto him in full glare, but if he had gotten any second thoughts from asking he wasn't about to heed them now he'd started. "Why?"Aphelius stared at him just long enough to be uncomfortable. "A life is a life. I'm a medic. If I stand aside and let someone die when I could have saved them, that is a failing on my part. Being Garlean doesn't justify inaction." The soldier hadn't outright said it but it had been in his tone, and Aphelius was tired of unspoken words and tiptoeing around answers.He left the soldier to rest with his arm in a proper sling, suddenly feeling more exhausted about dealing with his own people than saving someong from a rampaging yeti. Perhaps being in the dispensary was better for him.
